Important arrival notes

The cottage can be difficult to find and may not appear correctly in every sat-nav. Fiona recommends arriving in daylight and parking on the ambulance-yard side. The property has low doors, narrow stairs and small bathrooms; all toilets are upstairs, so it is not convenient for wheelchair users.

DAY 1

Central Bannau Brycheiniog

Pen y Fan · Craig Cerrig-gleisiad · Brecon Canal Basin

  1. 07:15Leave CF10 3EA for Pont ar Daf. Allow approximately 1 hr 05-20.
  2. 08:30-12:15Pen y Fan summit walk. Allow 3-4 hours including weather pauses and photos.
  3. 12:15-13:00Drive via the A470 to Craig Cerrig-gleisiad; take a picnic or quick cafe stop.
  4. 13:00-14:00Roadside viewpoint or short reserve walk at Craig Cerrig-gleisiad.
  5. 14:00-14:25Drive to Brecon Canal Basin.
  6. 14:30-17:30Canal-basin walk, cafes and optional Dragonfly Cruise only when the current timetable fits.
  7. ReturnLeave Brecon around 17:30-18:00; arrive home approximately 18:45-19:30.
  8. TotalAbout 100-110 miles and 3-3.5 hours driving, plus walks and stops.

If cloud, wind or rain makes the summit unsuitable, replace Pen y Fan with a lower viewpoint and spend longer in Brecon.

Western Bannau Brycheiniog

Llyn y Fan Fach · Carreg Cennen Castle

  1. 08:00Leave CF10 3EA for Llyn y Fan Fach. Allow 1 hr 40-2 hr; the final approach is narrow and slow.
  2. 10:00-13:00Short lake walk only: walk to the lake, enjoy the escarpment view and return the same way.
  3. LunchUse a packed lunch or stop in Llandovery or Llandeilo. Do not rely on facilities at the lake car park.
  4. 14:15-16:15Visit Carreg Cennen Castle, allowing time for the uphill approach and viewpoints.
  5. ReturnLeave by 16:30-17:00; arrive home approximately 18:15-19:00.
  6. TotalAbout 135-150 miles and 4-4.75 hours driving, plus walking.

Do not add the full Llyn y Fan Fach ridge circuit on the same day as the castle. Roads are narrow and parking is limited.

Gower Peninsula

  2. Low tide AMVisit Broughton Bay and Blue Pool first, then lunch, Rhossili Bay and the Worm's Head clifftop viewpoint.
  3. Low tide PMStart at Rhossili viewpoint and beach, then visit Broughton and Blue Pool only with a safe return window.
  4. Worm's HeadThe viewpoint is straightforward. Crossing the causeway is a separate tidal walk.
  5. ReturnLeave Gower around 17:30-19:00; arrive home approximately 19:30-21:15.
  6. TotalAbout 145-160 miles and 4-5 hours driving, plus beach and cliff walks.

Tides decide this day. Blue Pool and Worm's Head have cut-off risk; check tide times, sea state and local advice before going below cliffs.

Elan Valley

  4. OptionalAdd Claerwen Dam only in good weather and with enough daylight for the remote road.
  5. ReturnLeave Elan around 16:30-17:30; arrive home approximately 19:00-20:15.
  6. TotalAbout 160-180 miles and 4.5-5.5 hours driving; more with Claerwen.

Expect remote roads, patchy mobile signal and exposed weather. Arrange fuel or charging before entering the valley. Keep Caerphilly Castle as a separate visit.

  3. 10:30-13:00Complete the pre-booked main activity: Phoenix, Tower Coaster, Tower Flyer or Tower Climber.
  4. 13:00-14:00Lunch at the venue or nearby in Hirwaun or Penderyn.
  5. AfternoonAdd a second pre-booked Tower activity, or take a relaxed scenic stop around Penderyn and the southern edge of Waterfall Country.
  6. ReturnLeave around 16:30-17:30; arrive home approximately 17:30-18:45.
  7. TotalAbout 65-75 miles and 1.75-2.25 hours driving, plus booked activities and stops.
